New York Times Publishes Several Women's Health-Related Articles

The New York Times on Tuesday in its health section published several articles related to women's health. Summaries appear below.
  • "Trying Again After Recurrent Miscarriages": The Times examined potential causes of recurrent miscarriages. About one in every 100 women of reproductive age will experience recurrent pregnancy loss, the Times reports. The causes of recurrent miscarriage often are unclear, and 50% to 75% of couples experiencing recurrent pregnancy loss "will have no certain diagnosis," according to a recent report by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. According to the Times, 80% to 90% of women who experience one miscarriage will have a subsequent successful pregnancy even with no treatment, but women who experience two or three miscarriages have a success rate of 75% and 65%, respectively, for subsequent pregnancies. According to the Times, "[m]yths abound as to why women experience recurrent miscarriages," and treatments for several reported causes are "controversial" (Brody, New York Times, 3/25).

  • "Disparities: Wealth Factor Seen in Mammogram Rates": Women ages 65 and older are more likely to receive a mammogram if they are wealthy, according to an analysis in the March 10 issue of The Archives of Internal Medicine, the Times reports. For the analysis, researchers looked at the mammogram rates of more than 4,000 women in the age group and found that 82% of those with a net worth of $100,000 or more had a mammogram, compared with 68% of those whose net worth was less than $10,000. Physicians prescribing mammograms to older women are advised to consider whether the woman will live for at least five years because the benefit of the test often is not realized for several years, the researchers said. Among women unlikely to live for five years, 48% of wealthy women received the screening, compared with 32% of lower-income women. The researchers said that wealthier women might be more likely to request the screening and that lower-income women might face financial or other barriers to receiving the test (Nagourney, New York Times, 3/25).

  • "The Claim: Grapefruit Can Increase the Risk of Breast Cancer": According to the Times, a recent e-mail chain has created some concern about a possible link between consumption of grapefruit and increased risk of breast cancer. Two studies published in the British journal Cancer have found conflicting results on the issue. A 2007 study published in the journal found a 30% increased risk of breast cancer among postmenopausal women who ate about half a grapefruit every other day, even after other risk factors for the disease were considered. Researchers in the study said an enzyme in grapefruit called CYP 3A4, which can increase estrogen levels, could account for the increased risk. A study published in the journal this year that followed 77,000 women ages 30 to 55 did not find an increased risk of breast cancer among women who consumed grapefruit or grapefruit juice. Experts from the American Cancer Society said the studies lacked sufficient evidence to change recommendations on grapefruit consumption but said concerned women could reduce their consumption of grapefruit (O'Connor, New York Times, 3/25).

Not only is stomach fat a nuisance to get rid of, it can actually be dangerous. Stomach fat can lead to: Diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, abnormal lipids, and insulin resistance. So while trying to lease weight you may just be trying to look better on the beach, you could also be saving your life.

First of all, you have to improve your diet. This means a diet high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, and lean meats. Try to have 4 to 6 small meals a day while avoiding foods that are high in fat and carbohydrates. Doing this helps boost the metabolism and prevents overeating.


Weve all heard the term beer belly and the truth is that beer and alcohol in general will cause you to have an increase in stomach fat. If you drink regularly, make sure you cut down or you will find yourself fighting a losing battle. Also, try to cut down on sodas and canned juices as they contain a high amount of sugar. As always, drink a lot of water.

Improving your diet wont be enough; youll need to begin a daily exercise regimen. While sit-ups and crunches are great exercises for getting rid of stomach fat, they arent as effective as you may think as spot reduction is impossible in any part of the body. What youll need to do if focus on total body fitness, and engage in a full body work out for at least 30 minutes a day. This includes swimming, jogging, and brisk walking for example. If youre not working up a sweat youre probably not getting the work out you need to lose stomach fat.

We all know that unhealthy eating habits are largely responsible for stomach fat, but did you know it could also be symptom of not getting enough sleep? This lowers both the bodys insulin production which harms the bodys ability to burn calories and leptin, a protein that tells the body when its full. If you find yourself up late regularly, remember to take a break a get some sleep, for your healths sake.

Believe it or not, stress is another big reason for excess stomach fat. The reason for this is that stressful situations cause an increase of hormones in our bodies, such as cortisol and insulin. High cortisol levels have been related to an increase in fat production and appetite with the stomach reaping most of the results. The advice for this, besides finding a more stress-free job, is to exercise when youre feeling stressed, when possible, even if this means going for a short walk.

Its not all bad news for you though, believe it or not, stomach fat is usually the first thing to go when youre losing weight. Just focus on fewer calories and more exercise. Most importantly is when you lose the weight, keep it off! Many will go back to their old eating habits as soon they get results and lose all their hard work.

The fad diets can cause weight cycling, so fad dieting in also dubbed as Yo-Yo dieting, which means a continuing pattern of gaining and losing weight. The fad diets are considered unhealthy. The common examples of Fad diets include the Cabbage Soup Diet and the Grapefruit Diet.

Good Weight Loss Diet: The diet that helps losing weight in a positive manner is a good Weight Loss Diet. It does not reduce the energy. A balanced low fat diet is considered as the best weight loss diet. A balanced low fat diet is high in healthy carbohydrates, low in fat and moderate in protein.

A good Weight Loss Diet should be rich in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, which are specially recommended for weight control and preventing diseases such as cancer and heart disease.

Low-fat hi-carb diet: The Low-fat hi-carb diet is considered a good weight loss diet. The Low-fat hi-carb diet is the diet in fat AND high in complex carbohydrates. The Low-fat hi-carb diets are also recommended for optimal athletic performance. The high-fat as well as high-protein diets both are unhealthy. The fat contains more than twice the calories of other foods and it seven times more easily converted to body fat than carbohydrates.

The CARMEN study, published in the International Journal of Obesity, divulged, how increasing carbohydrate intake could help weight control. The study showed that when volunteers increased their consumption of carbohydrates and reduced their consumption of fat, they were able to lose body fat and maintain this weight loss without counting calories or embarking on awkward or life-changing slimming regimes.

The diets rich in complex carbohydrates are less fattening, very healthy and much less easily converted to body fat. The complex carbohydrates are made up of 'complex' molecules, so it takes longer for body to digest them. The complex carbohydrates make body stay full for longer without upsetting the system. One should eat about 60% of his/her calories in the form of complex carbohydrates.

The foods high in complex carbohydrates include whole meal bread, potatoes, pasta, rice (esp. brown) fruits, vegetables, beans, legumes.

Objective: The goal of a good weight loss diet should be to improve the long term eating habits. The weight loss diet or weight loss program that does not teach good long-term eating habits can not solve weight problem.

The diet should include all food groups.
The diet should offer an eating plan that can be followed for life.
The diet should include enough information to help a person make informed choices on calories, fat and general dietary modification.
Therefore, all fad diets, fat-burning diets, single-food diets, diet supplements, expensive pre-packaged diet foods and all weight loss gimmicks like weight loss patches, appetite suppressants and 'fat-burning' weight loss supplements are not likely to tackle the weight loss problem.

Every day that I wake up I know what I have to do when I get up. First I go and brush my teeth then I jump into the shower after that I get out and dry my hair. Once I have dyed my hair I brush it following that I put on my make up. But everyone has their personal own routines that they like to follow so enough with mine. There is although a part that you should always have in your routine and that is to make sure that you exercise because exercising will always keep you in the best of health. There is a bunch of ways that you can get them done like shooting hoops, cardio machines, and boxing a punching bag.

Shooting a basketball is a great exercise to add to your everyday routine because it is an awesome cardiovascular workout. Shooting hoops will also tone your calves and your arms from the fluent motions that you are going to have to do over in over while shooting hoops. Every single thing that you do when you are playing basketball is helping some sort of muscle that you have in your body because it make you exert so much energy.

Cardio machines are other great exercises that you can add to your every day routines because they will get you in great health in no time. There is the elliptical machine which really works out your abs, arms, and legs when you are on it. There is also the bicycle which is an awesome exercise for your calves and quadriceps and will get up your stamina so you will be able to do more cardiovascular exercises. Another exercise that you can do is the treadmill which will really get your heart beat pumping. The stairs is another great cardio machine because it works out your bottom half of your body.

Another great exercise that you should add to your everyday routine is boxing a punching bag because this will get your endurance up so much. Also boxing will get your arms, chest, and shoulders ripped and toned in a matter of a couple of days. Even If you do not have a punching bag you can still just stand still and punch into the air because it is a great non contact exercise.

All of these exercises are great to add to your everyday routine because they all will help you get to a new healthier you.
